The history of mental health America
Mental health has been a concern in America for centuries. The first mental hospital in the country, Philadelphia Hospital, was founded in 1751. In the 1800s, reformers pushed for better treatment of the mentally ill, and asylums were established across the country. However, these facilities often mistreated patients, and by the early 1900s, there was growing concern about the conditions in mental hospitals. In response to this criticism, Congress passed the National Mental Health Act in 1946, which established the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
The 1970s saw a number of important advances in mental health care. The first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which catalogues different psychiatric disorders, was published in 1970. In addition, the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980 provided funding for community-based mental health services.
Mental health care has continued to evolve in the years since then. In 2006, Congress passed the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which requires insurers to provide equal coverage for mental and physical health conditions. And in 2009, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, which expanded mental health coverage and prohibited discrimination against people with mental illness.
Despite these advances, there is still much work to be done when it comes to mental health care in America. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), about one in five Americans suffers from a mental illness each year. And although mental health disorders are treatable, only about 40% of those who need treatment receive it. Mental health America continues to face challenges in ensuring that all people have access to quality care.
